Information About Pricing A DJ For Your Event

Pricing is usually one of the most important factors people consider when hiring a DJ. The DJ fees must fit within the budget for the event. Consider the following factors when considering the fees of a DJ or DJ company.

3 DJ Categories (By Price)

1. Lowest Price Range ($150-$300)- Many novice or hobbiest DJs charge a very low rate. You can find DJs in this category listing their services on Craiglist, or you may hear about your friend's cousin or brother who DJs in that price range. The low rates are great for your budget, although they carry risks which may far outweigh the cost savings. The biggest risks are: 1)equipment failure during the event, 2) DJ is a no-show; 3) Poor music selection or DJ does not listen to your requests; 4) DJ is rude and uncooperative to you and your guests. There are certainly DJs in this range that may be great for your event, but be wary unless you are very confident in the DJs experience and track record.

2. Mid Range ($400-$900)- For professional DJs, this range is fairly common. In fact, this is the price range that I feel experienced professional DJs should charge. As the consumer, you still need to do your homework and make sure that the DJ is a good match for your event.

3. High Range ($1000-$2000)- Many professional DJs are beginning to charge $1000-$2000 for events, especially for weddings. I was a member of a professional DJ assocation years ago and the leadership highly encouraged other members to double their rates and to charge $1500 or so for an event. The logic was that if most professional DJs charged high rates like that, customers will expect to pay that much. The truth is that you are often paying double the amount that you would be paying for another DJ who is just as good or better. There are some DJs whose unique talents and experience warrant the higher amount, but more often than not average quality DJs are charging twice as much as they are worth.

In summary, when going from the lowest price range to the middle price range for a DJ, you are usually getting much more bang for your buck in terms of quality and experience. When going from the mid-range to the high-range your average benefits are much smaller or are simply non-existent.
